A man crosses from Brownsville, Texas to Matamoros, Mexico.

My Republic

The U.S. Mexico borderlands are most often described as the peripheries of a dividing line. My Republic refuses that lens categorically and reframes the landscape as a character that creates a unique and unifying experience far into the American Southwest and deep into northern Mexico.

The work is a personal reflection on the landscape, its history, and the artist’s family’s place in it. This mixed media installation combines photography, video, sculpture, and artifacts to create an immersive experience. It draws visual connections between communities and disrupts revisionist narratives.
