Whitsun Hymn by the Bergen Philharmonic Chorus • Melanie Burford

Seventy-five choir members from the Bergen Philharmonic Chorus, sheltering in the safety of their own homes, created this extraordinary piece of music during quarantine from the Coronavirus in Bergen, Norway. Each singer recorded their own selfie videos which was then pieced together to create The Whitsun Hymn from Edvard Grieg from Peer Gynt.

Music knows no borders and The Bergen Philharmonic Chorus created this piece to offer you all some hope and relief during this challenging time.

As always, we stand together.

"Shortly before Peer Gynt falls into the arms of Solveig and she sings her Lullaby, the choir sings "O, blessed morning". Typically, at rehearsals, as we do on stage, we stand shoulder to shoulder. In this unique and frightening situation, for once we obey the words of the Great Bøyg and avoid just that. Yet we stand together, painlessly through fiber and broadband, we, the Bergen Philharmonic Choir, bring you Edward Grieg's Whitsun Hymn, with the promise of hope and new, blessed mornings."

Blessed morning
then the tongues of the kingdom of God
hit Earth like blazing steel
From Earth to the Castle
now the heir sings
In the language of the Kingdom of God

"Like før Peer Gynt synker sammen i Solveigs armer og hun synger sin vuggevise, synger koret ”Velsignede morgen”. Til vanlig står vi skulder ved skulder både på øving og på scenen. Når vi nå befinner oss i en ny og skremmende situasjon, skal vi for en gangs skyld følge Bøygens ord og ”gå utenom”. Likevel står vi samlet, og her kommer Griegs Pinsesalme smittefritt via fiber og bredbånd fra Bergen Filharmoniske Kor, til dere, med bud om håp og nye, gode morgener."
